With the help of Sawyer filters, Fiji has become one of the first nations with a border to border clean water solution.

Initially, 50% of Fijians did not have access to a treated water supply, and instead relied on contaminated wells or rivers shared with animals and wildlife for their water.

GIS (geographic information system) software is currently tracking the implementation of 25,000 Sawyer filters and the results for the following will be submitted for publication in journals and be featured in clean water conferences around the world:

  • Rediksyon dyare
  • Travay ak jou lekòl yo te repouse ki asosye avèk maladi dlo
  • Ekonoloji dlo achte ak ekonoloji medikal ki asosye ak maladi dlo

The Sawyer water filter is a long-term solution. As part of the process, there is follow-up with families multiple times to track outcomes with data and provide continuing education.

99.3% of filters work properly on follow-up.

DATA-DRIVEN SOLUTIONS

Prior to installations in Fiji, households reported 23.5% of households reported health issues prior to filter installation and consequently lost on average 1.4 days of work each month.

Only 0.8% of households reported health issues after filter use. Financial benefits included an average of $16 USD savings monthly in health costs after filter installation, in addition to working an 1.4 extra days per month. Households also saved an average of $11 USD per month on purchased water.

Jwenn aksè dlo pwòp nan yon peyi tout antye!

The Marshall Islands may be small in terms of land mass, but cover a massive area of the pacific ocean about half way between Hawaii and Australia. To say these islands are remote is an understatement. Traveling to these islands is difficult.

Sawyer helps to disperse filters, insect repellent, and sunscreen to impacted communities. When disasters strike, Sawyer filters are often on site within the first 48 hours. This was true for Hurricanes Milton and Helene, which ravaged the Southern Appalachians in 2024. Entire counties were on a boil water notice with no end in sight.

Being the perfect solution to bacteria-ridden and sediment-filled water, Sawyer donated over 24,000 filters to the region affected by the hurricanes. From empowering individuals to gearing up groups including churches, air drops, and SAR teams, we’re proud of the impact we were able to make together.

Sawyer x Give Clean Water

Before accepting a role as Sawyer’s first International Director, Darrel Larson founded Give Clean Water in 2008 to solve the problem of contaminated water.

The organization’s mission is to provide sustainable, clean drinking water solutions for everyone who needs it. Give Clean Water has funded 535 water projects for over 50,000 people in Fiji and has been adopted as Fiji’s “best practice” for treating their rural water problems.

What makes Give Clean Water stand out is its focus on impact analysis using data collection and follow up visitations. They are dedicated to ensuring their work in Fiji is valid and backed with tangible, evident results, and research is still ongoing.

The Process

  1. Assess- The process begins with a door-to-door census for each community and pathogen testing of the local water sources. This ensures that the Sawyer water filter is an appropriate solution for the area.
  2. Distribute- Once the true scope of clean water scarcity and the effectiveness of the Sawyer filter to treat it, a systematic distribution begins.
  3. Follow up - The Bucket Ministry team visits every household at least three times to follow up. During these visits the team member ensures the daily maintenance is being performed correctly to achieve its long-term effectiveness.
Caption: “In the beginning, drinking this water often made us sick. I am grateful to The Bucket Ministry for providing us with a bucket filter that purifies our water, now we no longer get sick or suffer from diarrhea. Now we filter clean water and we are healthy.”
